Adding Pages / Content to Rooted
Tags: Rooted
Rooted is a site by staff, for staff. It has information about Who We Are as an organization, What We’re Working On (i.e., current initiatives), How to Work With… different departments, Forms, How-Tos, and innumerable updates on staff, events, policies, benefits, and other important details that shape the Arboretum as a workplace.
And like the Arboretum, Rooted is continually growing and evolving. We may to add new pages or content to reflect those changes and stay up to date.
But what is the process for adding new pages or content?
The first step is to contact rooted@mortonarb.org to set up a meeting to discuss your thoughts for new pages. Some things might be quite easy to implement, while others might take more time to think through and get into place; we’ll figure all of that about by Working Together!
In advance of that meeting, take a look at the questions below to get started.
Think about your content. What do you want to share with staff? Why will it be important / useful to them? How much context will they need? Does this information live somewhere else (e.g., mortonarb.org, Google Drive, Arborversity)? How “evergreen” will it be (i.e., how often will it need to be updated)?
Take ownership. Are you (or someone in your department) prepared to manage the content on the page so that it remains accurate and up-to-date?
Look around the site for inspiration. Do you see any pages that resemble what you’re envisioning for your page? Are there content “blocks” that you think would work well for your content? (The latter half of the Rooted Style Guide page will also give you some ideas about what “blocks” are available for different purposes on the site.)
Consider communication. Rooted is a great, centralized resource—but it’s not usually a place where people go looking for random content. We know that most people get pointed to Rooted pages through the weekly Digest or other all-staff emails. Who specifically are you trying to reach? Where do they typically get their information? How will you let people know your page exists? Why should they bother visiting?
